SPI, the territorial development agency for the province of Liège, approached me to create a motion design launch video for Mind It — an innovative digital platform designed to support local government officials across municipalities in the Liège region. The platform’s purpose is to empower municipal decision-makers with data-driven insights for critical community development questions: Should the town invest in a new public school? Build a parking lot? Redesign an entire neighborhood?
The video would serve as the centerpiece of Mind It’s debut at Municipalia, the major trade fair for local authorities in Belgium, where it needed to capture the attention of government officials and clearly communicate the platform’s value in a crowded exhibition environment.
My approach centered on finding a visual metaphor that would make the complex concept of collective municipal decision-making both accessible and memorable. The solution: bees and hives.
This metaphor perfectly encapsulated the platform’s philosophy — just as bees work collectively to build and maintain their hive, citizens and their municipalities collaborate to develop thriving communities. The concept reinforced the idea of organized collaboration, shared intelligence, and purposeful development that Mind It facilitates.
Working within SPI’s signature yellow color palette, I developed a motion design narrative that brought this metaphor to life. The animation illustrates how individual citizens (bees) contribute to the collective well-being of their community (hive), with Mind It serving as the tool that enables informed, strategic decisions about how that community grows and evolves.
The visual language balances professional credibility with engaging storytelling, ensuring the video resonates with government officials while making complex data-driven decision-making feel approachable and valuable.
The launch video successfully introduced Mind It at Municipalia, providing SPI with a compelling visual tool to explain the platform’s purpose and value to municipal decision-makers. The bee and hive metaphor proved highly effective in communicating the collaborative, community-focused nature of the platform.
The animation gave SPI a memorable, shareable asset that positioned Mind It as both an innovative technological solution and a tool deeply rooted in the values of community development and collective intelligence.
